How to Renew Your Georgia Barber License

September 15, 2022 by Ivy Hultquist

In the state of Georgia, barbers are required to renew their licenses every two years. The good news is that the renewal process is relatively simple and can be done entirely online. You just need to follow a few simple steps to make sure you avoid delays or extra fees. We will cover the continuing education requirements, where to find a board-approved renewal course online, and provide step-by-step guide to renewing your Georgia barber license so you can get back in your busy barbershop.

First, let’s review a few things.

License Tiers: Master Barber and Barber II

There are two tiers of barbers in Georgia:

  • Master Barber
  • Barber II

The difference between the two comes down to the number of training hours you completed.

  • Master Barbers have completed 1500 hours at a Board-approved school
  • Barber II licensees have completed 1140 hours at a Board-approved school

In addition, there is an Instructor license. Barber instructors must have completed an additional 750 school hours at a Board approved school. (Source)

Regardless of your Master barber or Barber II tier, you have the same renewal requirements, deadline, and fees. Barber instructors, your requirements are slightly different and we will get to those soon.

What are the continuing education requirements for a Master Barber or Barber II License?

Both Master Barber and Barber II licenses require 5 CE Hours from a Board-Approved provider each renewal cycle.

To renew a Georgia barber license, each licensee must provide the Board proof of completing a total of 5 continuing education (or CE) hours. Of those 5 hours, 3 hours of the total 5 hours must be a course in health and safety developed or approved by the Board.

At Cosmo Credits, we offer a 5 hour online continuing education course that is approved by the Board and offers the required health and safety course.

Cosmo Credits is an approved provider by the Georgia and Cosmetology and Barber Board.

Our provider number is CEP-000140.

Our 5 hour Barber renewal package includes the following Board-approved courses:

When is the renewal deadline for my Georgia barber license?

Both Master Barbers and Barber II have a December 31st of even years renewal deadline. That means the next renewal deadline is December 31st, 2022.

Instructors, schools, and barbershops have different renewal deadlines. Below are all renewal deadlines for the Barber board.

Master Barber: December 31st of even-numbered years

Barber II: December 31st of even-numbered years

Barbershop: June 30th of odd-numbered years

Barber Instructor: June 30th of odd-numbered years

Barber School: June 30th of odd-numbered years

How much does it cost to renew my Georgia barber license?

To renew a master barber or barber II license, the renewal fee is $50. For instructor licenses, barbershops, and schools, please see this fee schedule.

I have a Georgia barber instructor license, how do I renew that license?

All barber instructors seeking renewal of licenses must complete fifteen hours of Board approved continuing education, with at least half of the 15 hours in teaching techniques, lesson planning, or other advanced teacher training. There are no CE exemptions for barber instructors.

Cosmo Credits does not offer continuing education for the renewal of Georgia Barber Instructor Licenses at this time.

When does my Georgia barbershop license expire?

All barbershop licenses in Georgia expire on June 30th of odd-numbered years (2023, 2025, etc). There are no CE requirements for barbershop licenses.

Georgia Rules:

The facility owner(s) shall ensure that each employee posts, in an open and public area, the current license/permit issued to them by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers or a current copy of the online verification of licensure.

I would not wait for a paper reminder from the board about your renewal deadline. Most boards no longer send paper reminders or allow you to send in paper renewals. And, on top of that, many just have you print your renewed license now.

Ready to take that first renewal step?

The first step in renewing your license is completing your continuing education. Here is the 5 hour board-approved renewal course link, one more time.
