Texas Cosmetology CE Requirements
Every Texas cosmetology and barber board licensee must complete 4 CE hours of TDLR-approved Continuing Education before each renewal. There is no exemption for your first renewal. CE is required every cycle.
CE hours required: 4 hours per renewal cycle.
Renewal cycle: Every 2 years. Your renewal date is set individually, 2 years from your license issue date. Unlike many states, Texas licensees do not share a single renewal deadline. You can look up your expiration date on TDLR’s website.
CE topic requirements:
| Subject | Hours Required |
|---|---|
| Sanitation, Health, and Safety | 1 hour |
| Human Trafficking Prevention | 1 hour |
| Cosmetology or Barber-Related Topics | 2 hours |
| Total | 4 hours |
Who must complete CE: All active licensees, including Cosmetologists (Operators), Barbers, Estheticians, Manicurists, Eyelash Extension Specialists, and Manicurist/Estheticians. There is no first-renewal exemption.
How CE compliance works: Your CE provider is required to electronically report your completed hours to the TDLR within 7 days of course completion. We report yours within 1 business day. You do not need to submit CE proof with your renewal application, but you must keep your certificate of completion for 2 years. The TDLR may request it as part of an inspection or investigation.
