Who is this 1-Hour Texas Sanitation Course for?

The TDLR website states:

“If you have held a license for at least 15 years, you will only need to complete one hour of department-approved continuing education in sanitation. The additional three hours of continuing education will be waived and will not be required.”

If you have held your Cosmetology, Barber, Esthetician, Manicurist, or related license for 15 years, this 1-hour Texas Sanitation Course is the only course you need to meet your continuing education requirement for license renewal.

The course covers:

• Safety and hygiene regulations in the workplace
• Cleanliness of salon, spa, and barber areas
• Proper sterilization and disinfection methods
• Recognizing potential health hazards
• Human trafficking awareness (a required topic)

If you have not held your license for 15 years, you will most likely need to complete the 4-hour continuing education course approved by TDLR.

Important Update: Barbers Must Complete CE Starting September 1, 2025

Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas barbers are also required to complete continuing education to renew their license. This sanitation course meets the requirement for barbers who have been licensed for 15 years or more.

This 1-hour sanitation course is approved for licensees who have been licensed for 15 years or more. Eligible license types include:

Is the Texas Sanitation Course Timed?

Yes. All TDLR-approved courses must have a timer to verify your attendance. You can pause and come back anytime.

If you’re idle, you’ll be logged out, but your place will be saved. Once the timer hits 50 minutes, you’ll verify your attendance and instantly get your completion certificate.

Is There a Test at the End?

No. There is no test required. You’ll verify your Texas license number and confirm you spent the required time in the course. Then you’ll create and download your certificate.
