Ohio Barber License Renewal Requirements and FAQ

When is the next renewal deadline for the Ohio Barber Board?

August 15th, 2024 is the next renewal deadline for the following license types:

• Barbers
• Barber Teachers/Instructors

Barbers have a different renewal deadline than cosmetology, manicurists, estheticians, natural hair stylists, hair designers, and boutique licenses issued in Ohio. The next renewal deadline for these Ohio cosmetology license types is January 15th, 2025. What are the continuing education requirements that need to be met prior to license renewal?

Again, there have been some changes for the 2024 renewal. There are two courses required for the upcoming renewals FOR ALL BARBER LICENSE TYPES

Course 1: Ohio Board Laws and Rules (1 CE hour)

• may applied to multiple barber license types
• only provided by the Ohio board
• free!
• Take this course here: on CE Broker

Course 2: Safety and Infection Control (3 CE hours)

• if taken as a stand alone course (not in a package), this course can be applied to multiple barber license types
• course can be taken by a Ohio board approved provider
• the Ohio board does not offer this course
• can also be taken on CE Broker from approved providers

What isn’t required for renewing an Ohio Barber License?

The following have been removed as renewal requirements for barber license types:

• 1 CE hour of personal wellness
• 3 CE hours of related to a licensee’s scope

Can I complete my continuing education online?

Yes! You can complete your continuing education courses online as long as the course is approved by the Ohio Board.

I have multiple licenses. Can I apply a completed course to multiple licenses?

If the course is taken as a standalone course and not in a package, it can be applied to multiple barber license types provided you enter them during the course process.

Do I have to sit at my computer for the entire 3 hours of courses taken on your website?

Our courses are self-paced and can be completed on your own schedule. You can login and complete it in one sitting or over days, weeks, or months. We also plan to only offer this course directly on CE Broker for this renewal. Your course hours will be reported quickly and automatically after passing your exam.

3 Barber License Renewal Exemptions

A few of you may not need to complete the renewal requirements. Some exemptions and special circumstances exist.

New licensees
Congratulations on your first Ohio barber license renewal! You won’t have to worry about continuing education hours this time around, but don’t forget to pay the renewal fee to keep your license up and running. Just note that if you’re an instructor, this exemption won’t apply to you. See you in 2026!

Licensees that are 65+ years old
Turning 65 has its perks for licensees! If you reach this golden age before October 3, 2024, you can wave goodbye to CE hours. No more sitting through seminars or online courses – just enjoy your CE retirement! Of course, you’ll still need to keep your license current and active by paying the renewal fee. But hey, at least you can put that extra time towards something more enjoyable, like a round of golf or an evening walk.

Licensees that have been licensed for 30+ years?
If you’re a seasoned licensee, with thirty or more years of experience under your belt, we have good news for you! If you have held a license for 30+ years as of October 3, 2024, you don’t have to worry about completing any Continuing Education (CE) hours to keep your board license current and active. That’s right, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the recognition of your hard-earned expertise. Of course, you’ll still need to pay the renewal fee.

Is your license expired, escrow/ inactive, or need to be restored?

Don’t let an inactive or lapsed license hold you back from achieving your career goals. Whether your license is in escrow or needs to be restored, the Board’s website has got you covered on the steps to get back to active status.

A lapsed status may seem daunting, but with the amnesty program, you can restore it to active status by paying delinquent and current fees and completing the appropriate number of Continuing Education hours. The amnesty program to restore a lapsed license to an active status includes the following requirements:

complete the required number of Continuing Education (CE) hours based upon the number of years in which your license has been lapsed.
